Supreme Court Rules That Cops Don't Have to Knock

The high court ruled 5-4 Thursday in a case from Detroit that trial judges cannot exclude evidence collected by police who have a valid search warrant but fail to properly announce themselves before breaking in to a residence.

Several lawyers contacted yesterday by The Times-Dispatch said the likely effect of the ruling will be to make trying cases a little easier for prosecutors and a little tougher for defense lawyers.
