FL & MI: An Object Lesson in Politics

The Michigan legislators moved their primary ahead of the February 5th primary date with the full help and support of the Democrats in their midst. They did this in order to try to preempt New Hampshire and Iowa. The Democratic primary votes cast there should never have been counted in any way, period. However, everyone should know that the Republicans in Florida rammed the primary date ahead of February 5th with full knowledge that it was breaking Democratic party rules and would bring sanctions upon the voters of Florida. Further, they knew that this could alienate Florida voters from the Democratic party. What they could not have known was that the havoc it would wreck would go beyond their wildest dreams.

At the time that the date was set, Hillary Clinton was the heir apparent and there was no way for the Republicans to know that it would be any other way. I suspect they simply wanted to take every opportunity to swing the independent voters of Florida over to the Republican column. The fact that there is now a crisis in the Democratic party, of which a significant portion of the party is swearing to either stay home or vote republican in November, goes far beyond the dreams of the RNC. That the Democrats are blaming each other for this mess is perhaps the most instructive piece to this Saturday afternoon melodrama because the real people who should be suffering are not the DNC or the voters of Florida, but the Republican legislators of Florida. The fact that they seem to be getting a free pass is amazing!

When the announcement was first made by the DNC that Florida would not count, it should have included a stern admonishment of the RNC stunt and a call to arms for November's state elections. This type of political maneuvering should have been the rallying cry of every democrat in Florida. There should have been thousands of people rolling up their sleeves and diving in to remove as many Republican state legislators this fall as possible. Instead, the DNC has allowed this entire mess to come to a head and they have a fracture in their party so wide that you could drive the Republican National Committee right through it... and the RNC may just do that.

I don't know how this will work in the fall; whether the Democrats will be able to heal their wounds and unite behind one candidate is something none of us can know at this time. However, I do know that if a democrat wins the White House this year, it will not be because of the efforts of the DNC, but in spite of.
