I'm taking a day off November 6

I've decided that it is important to do whatever I can to help Libertarians get the Henrico Board of Supervisors. To that end I encourage everyone to do what I'm going to do: sacrifice one of my vacation days to help canvas polling locations. Please consider doing this as it is imperative that we put forth the effort to help shape our future as a party. You have the ability to make a big difference. Both Matt and George have a reasonable chance of polling well and taking the time to show up to make a difference will really help out our candidates.

Grass Roots Boot-Camp

Do you want to learn first hand how to get people elected? Do you want to have some fun doing it? Do you want to make a difference? Then join us in northern Virginia on November 3 & 4!

The advocates offshoot for the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood is organizing a grass roots boot-camp for Janet Oleszek. This boot-camp will be a first hand look at the ground level for anyone who wants to see real grass roots organization in progress. Janet is running for Sen. Ken Cuccinelli's sentate seat. Senator Cuccinelli is well know for having introduced anti-abortion and anti-birth control legislation and was one of the 21 votes needed to pass the bill containing the abusive driver fees. This first time senator won his seat by a mere 2,104 votes and is a perfect target for removal with some grass roots effort.

The goal is to swing the balance over to Janet Oleszek's side by doing the very things Libertarians need to learn: effective grassroots organization. Showing Planned Parenthood that Virginia has an active Libertarian movement ready to help when our goals align will give both Planned Parenthood and the future senator something to think about!

Planned Parenthood will be providing all training, hotel rooms and food along with a red Planned Parenthood Action Fund t-shirts. Any Libertarian who joins in this effort will also receive a Libertarian button to wear on their shirt to let everyone know who we are.

This is a golden opportunity to learn grass roots organization and make a difference that will be noticed by many. To find out more about the Northern Virginia boot Camp or RSVP to attend, please contact Courtney Jones, Grassroots Organizer for the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood. Please let her know you are a Libertarian so we can impress upon her and her colleagues that Virginia has an active Libertarian movement.

You can contact Courtney at Courntey.Jones@ppfa.org or at (804) 355-4358 extension 14 - please remember to mention you are a Libertarian.

[Editor's Note: We strongly support Sen. Cuccinelli for a number of reasons. He's one of the very few people in the VA Senate, who supports cutting taxes and reducing spending. Also he is one of the very very very few people in the VA Senate who supports your right to keep and bear arms. While he is very wrong on Planned Parenthood's issue, we believe he is good on a number of other issues which more than outweigh his position. Good libertarians can of course weigh the evidence for themselves and come to other conclusions. We at RichmondLiberty.org strive to cover events of interest to the whole freedom movement. We also hope to make clear our biases and not like other media outlets falsely claim to be fair and balanced or impartial as it is not humanly possible to completely divorce one's reporting from one's biases.]

R.I.P. John Berthoud

From the National Taxpayers Union:

We are sorry to announce the passing of John Berthoud. As you may know, he has led both the National Taxpayers Union and National Taxpayers Union Foundation over the last 11 years. We have looked to him as a strong leader, compassionate friend, and a fierce fighter for freedom.

Pete Sepp, Vice President for Communications, shared his surprise, "John Berthoud's death today was as sudden as it was shocking and saddening to all who knew him. His colleagues found him in peace at his home today. All of our staff, just as the entire policy community in Washington, are doing the best they can to cope with an irreplaceable loss."

We give our sincere condolences to his family and friends and hope you will pay tribute with comments to our blog and facebook group. Sepp continued, "John was a true 21st century Renaissance man. He was a teacher, a mentor, a respected intellectual, and a lover of life. That's what makes his passing all the more tragic."

Though we mourn the loss of a man and celebrate his amazing life filled with love, study, travel, and leadership, his cause and a hope for a brighter future lives on. We will press on with purpose and be thankful for his contributions to our own journeys.

Metro Richmond Libertarian Meetup Group Formed

A new Libertarian.Meetup.com group has been formed for the Metro Richmond Area. The group privately run and funded and is designed to create a focal point for event happening in the Richmond area. Once you join the web site, it will allow you to view and RSVP events. You can also take polls (there are several already waiting for you!) post messages and attend to other related activities.

While there really isn't a news section (we think Richmond Liberty does a fine job of this) there are ways to link to other web sites to the Meetup web site.

Everyone is encouraged to join up and begin using the site. It will provide a great way to stay "in the know", "shout out" and help event organizers plan for the correct number of attendees.

Virginia Verified Voting ACTION ALERT

Virginia Verified Voting ACTION ALERT 5 Sept 2007

Your help is needed TODAY! Time is short
After many years of delay, the U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote THURSDAY on HR 811 which will mandate all voting machines to provide voter-verified audit trails, and require states to audit federal elections. This is the best election integrity bill to date, and would advance the integrity of our elections in many critical areas. If HR 811 passes, it will provide great ammunition to continue reforming Virginia's opaque election systems.

Please call today to urge your Virginia representatives to vote YES on Bill HR. 811.
The earlier you call on Thursday, the better chance your message can reach your Congressman before the vote.
A very short message saying please vote YES could help sway the deciding vote.

(If you see this late in the day or on Friday, please still take a moment to call. Votes are often delayed)

1. Davis, Jo Ann 202 225-4261
2. Drake, Thelma 202 225-4215
3. Scott, Bobbie 202 225-2939
4. Forbes, J. Randy 202 225-6365
5. Goode, Virgil 202 225-4711
6. Goodlatte, Bob 202 225-5431
7. Cantor, Eric 202 225-2815
8. Moran, Jim 202-225-4376
9. Boucher, Rick 202 225-3861
10. Wolf, Frank 202 225-5136
11. Davis, Tom 202 225-1492

You can also send an automated email by following this link (best to call and click!)

HR. 811 safeguards our democracy in these ways:
--Requires a durable voter-verified paper ballot for all voters, so
they can be sure their votes were accurately recorded
--Bans paperless voting machines by 2008, allowing a phase-in of stricter standards by 2012
--Bans wireless devices and uncertified software in voting systems
--Requires routine random audits to check tallies for accuracy
(which is critical for audit trails to actually provide protection against error)
--Provides funding to make the necessary improvements
-- Adds needed sunshine to the cozy testing and verification processes for voting machines
--More information about the Bill 811.

It does not ban DREs entirely as some activists had hoped, just paperless ones, but it is
an enormous step in the right direction.

Fifty-Six Diverse Groups, Millions of Citizens, Send One Message to Congress: Don't Raise the Federal Gas Tax!

From the National Taxpayers Union

(Alexandria, VA) -- "Don't you dare!" That's the defiant stance of 56 citizen groups representing millions of Americans toward proposals to increase the federal excise tax on gasoline. The coalition, which was organized by the 362,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU), delivered its message in an open letter sent today to Congress and the President.

"Proponents of a federal gas tax increase insist that few would even notice the change in their fuel bills," the letter stated. "In reality, a 5 cent-per-gallon jump would ... cost American motorists an estimated $25 billion over the next three years. Combined with state gas taxes, many motorists would pay over $7.50 in taxes for the average fill-up. This is a substantial burden on families ..."

The letter is a response to policymakers who, following the bridge tragedy in Minnesota, sought to exploit the opportunity to press for higher federal fuel taxes. House Transportation Committee Chair James Oberstar, for example, has discussed a plan to increase the gasoline tax "temporarily" by 5 cents per gallon. The groups gave several reasons to oppose such schemes:

* Lack of money is not the problem. The 5-year Highway Bill enacted in 2005 represented a 42 percent spending increase over its predecessor, and contained over $20 billion in "earmarked" funds for parochial projects. The Fiscal Year 2008 Transportation Appropriations Bill continues this trend, with more than $2.2 billion in earmarks. Ironically, these two bills alone are laden with earmarked funding whose total would approach the revenue amount lawmakers now seek from a gas tax hike.
* "Temporary" fuel taxes tend to take on lives of their own. The 5-cent-per-gallon increase backed by President George H.W. Bush 17 years ago has yet to vanish as originally intended. The 4.3-cent-per-gallon hike that President Bill Clinton signed into law 14 years ago was billed as a deficit reduction measure, but was later "re-purposed" to other programs once budget shortfalls began to taper off.
* High energy costs make a gas tax hike especially difficult for families and small businesses to make ends meet.

The diverse list of signatories to the statement includes the National Grange, the Family Research Council, the Log Cabin Republicans, and the Islamic Free Market Institute. In addition to national-level citizen groups such as NTU, Americans for Prosperity, and the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, grassroots organizations from over 20 states gave their endorsement to the open letter. Those groups hailed from California to Iowa to Virginia, and points in between.

"Instead of resorting so readily to tax hikes, Congress and the Executive Branch should conduct a review to determine which transportation projects are really worth funding and which are unnecessary," the letter concluded. "Elected officials should not be feeding more revenues into the gears of an ever-faster spending machine, and we urge you to oppose any federal gas tax hike."

NTU is a non-partisan citizen group founded in 1969 to work for lower taxes and smaller government. Note: The text of the open letter and a list of signatories are available at www.ntu.org.
